Now this is a big disappointment. Tôi đã rất háo hức khi mua được DVD cho vở nhạc kịch cổ trang này, nhưng đã không được happy cho lắm với những gì được xem. Ok, quần áo màu mè rực rỡ, set-on-scene hoành tráng, dàn diễn viên khá nổi tiếng...hơn hẳn Romeo et Juliette và Notre Dame de ParisTuy nhiên, các bài hát thì phải nói...not impressive. Câu chuyện thì gom quá nhiều chi tiết lịch sử lại, nên có cảm giác hơi ngắt quãng và thiếu sót.
Thời loạn lạc ở Pháp. Vua Louis XIV mới lên ngôi, nhưng vẫn còn là một đứa trẻ yếu ớt. Nữ hoàng Anne d'Autriche vì lo lắng cho con nên đã đưa nhà vua đi lánh nạn khỏi Paris. Cardinal Mazarin, thân tín của Nữ hoàng, đã dẹp được các cuộc nổi dậy được xướng lên bởi le Duc (công tước) de Beaufort. Hoàng gia vẫn còn hoang mang không biết vị vua trẻ tuổi có đủ khả năng lãnh đạo được họ hay không. Tuy nhiên, lo lắng cũng bằng thừa, vì quyền lực của vua đã bị Nữ hoàng và Cardinal nắm giữ.
Chính lúc ấy, Louis XIV trẻ tuổi đã phải lòng Marie Mannici, cháu gái của Cardinal Mazarin. Hoàng thượng, vì muốn chứng tỏ bản thân trước người yêu, đã quyết định ra trận. Thành công đâu không thấy, chỉ thấy nhà vua lâm trọng bệnh. Tưởng Louis XIV đã băng hà, hoàng gia quyết định lập anh trai ông là Phillipe I (còn có biệt danh là Monsieur) lên làm vua. Duy chỉ có Marie suốt ngày đêm cầu nguyện cho người bệnh.
Và điều kỳ diệu đã xảy ra: Louis XIV đã chiến thắng cái chết. Khi biết rằng chỉ có Marie là đã lo lắng cho mình, nhà vua quyết định cưới cô gái. Tuy nhiên, vì Marie xuất xứ không rõ ràng, dòng máu không thuần khiết , nên hạnh phúc của hai người đã bị cản trở. Marie thì bị Nữ hoàng đày đi biệt xứ, còn Louis XIV phải chuẩn bị political marriage với công chúa Tây Ban Nha.
Từ khi ấy, nhà vua đổi tính đổi nết, từ một người nhân từ thành một kẻ phóng túng, tiêu xài xa hoa. Ông còn ghét mẹ đến nỗi khi đến tuổi trưởng thành đã tước quyền nhiếp chính của bà. Ngoài ra, Louis XIV trăng hoa với bao nhiêu người đàn bà trong triều. Ông đã có một người con ngoài giá thú với Madame de Montespan, và sau đó lại lập goá phụ Françoise D'Aubigne thành vợ khi cảm nhận được sự nhân từ của bà.
Vở nhạc kịch highlight những bước ngoặt quan trọng trong cuộc đời của ông vua Mặt Trời, từ khi nhỏ đến khi hạ lệnh xây thành Versailles nguy nga tráng lệ bằng những đồng tiền xương máu của người dân vô tội. Kamel Ouali, người viết kịch bản, còn chêm vào hai sự kiện controversial của thời ấy: Affaire des poisons và Người đàn ông mang mặt nạ sắt

Những bài hát của Le Roi Soleil rất hay, nếu ta thưởng thức chúng riêng biệt. Nhưng một khi strung together và nghe in series...xin lỗi nhưng thua xa Roméo Juliette và Notre Dame de Paris. Có lẽ vì bái hát khá ảm đạm và trầm buồn, nên sau 1, 2 bài ta hết muốn nghe vì nó quá đau thương. Dù sao thì, do check out!

The opening song. For me, this is one of the better songs in the musical. It is rockish and strong. Set the scene and transfer a fervent feeling to the audience (kind of like the effect of Verone in R&J). This one is RECOMMENDED!

The song laments for the lost of lives during the revolution, ou la Fronde. This song represents the style of Le Roi Soleil: sad, depressing (after all it wasn't a very bright period for the public), and emotional. Considering how it was the 2nd in the series, it was spared the feeling of repetitive melody and consistent lyrics. And it sounds like Mort de Juliette, where she rejects god for taking Roméo away from her. On it's own, it's DECENT.

Louis XIV is explaining his joys and sadness upon receiving the throne of France. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. For me, this is definitely a MUST LISTEN!

Louis XIV and Marie Maccini are confessing their love to each other, vowing to devote themselves to each other. Too bad this dream is shortlived, but on the whole you can consider this song to be the signature song for Le Roi Soleil. However, I would think that it isn't as outstanding as the first and third song on this rotation. Still, it's ENJOYABLE.

Ooh...now this song is GOOD! It is very musical and melodious, yet not too overly dramatic so u can pop it into a regular playlist n not get bored by it. Louis XIV and Marie Mannici have just been forcefully separated by Anne D'Autriche, so they're commemorating their last moment together. DOWNLOAD IT!!!.

Louis XIV's brother, Phillipe I (Monsieur), has just introduced him to Madame de Montespan, who was to become his mistress (and with whom in the real history he has 7 children with!) It's rather shocking seeing how Phillipe I is played as being utterly gay in this musical. Maybe he was really homosexual, but the portrayal in this musical is a bit over the top (him with curly long wig is not a pretty sight). Just to show how dedicated Christophe Maé and all those who play Phillipe I are. TRY THIS SONG.

Lysa Ansaldi plays the mistress of Louis XIV, Madame de Montespan. To obtain his heart, she participated in the infamous Poison Affair where she performs a Black Mass to activate the witchcraft. However, Louis XIV thought she was trying to poison him, and removed her from his favourite list. This song is SURPRISINGLY GOOD!
I have not posted the ending songs to the musical, such as La vie passe and Tant qu'on reve encore. The simple reason is because I'm not impressed by them. They don't create a climax, nor profound emotions, nor dramatic enough to captivate me. The Acoustic versions of some of the songs, such as Être À La Hauteur is even better than the original, in my opinion, but I'm sure you'll be able to download them somewhere else on the Net. Or maybe I'll b nice enough to post them in a separate rotation. Or if u really want it, e-mail me!
